The outline when they first start hurts the most. After that your adrenelin kicks up and helps to numb the pain. If you're having a big piece done then concentrating on your breathing will help distract you from the pain. Also make sure that you are well rested and have eaten before you go in to have done - being tired and hungry will make it hurt more.
It might feel a bit prickly just after its done but that will go away quickly enough. Make sure you look after it properly so you don't have to go in a have alot of touch-ups done. And also don't pick/ stratch it if it gets itchy!

The key to having a tattoo on your foot is keeping it clean. If you've been wearing socks and shoes quite a bit after the tat was done then you may have developed an infection. Swelling should have occured around the tat site and not your whole foot. For comfort, ice your foot, keep it eleveated to return blood flow to the body, and leave the site open to air. If the pain and swelling haven't gone away and you soon develop a fever. Go see a doctor.

I have tattoos on both of my upper arms. It's like being rapid-fire pricked by a sewing machine (if the artist is using a needle gun). Yeah he uses novocaine cream to dull the pain but it still stings....after that. it will swell for a week (make sure you're not prone to keloids).
If you're committed to get a tattoo...just ignore or shut out the pain. Learn to live with the pain....it's a rite of passage.
Good Luck.

Mine have hurt me more than I'd hoped, but less than I'd feared. And never to the point that I wanted the tattooist to stop. It's like a burning sensation, and you can concentrate it away, if you get my drift.
Take a few strong painkillers before you go, they might not actually do anything but the placebo effect could well help.
Remember to think long and hard before you get it done, it'll be there for ever...
Good luck

I've got some on the back of my neck and shoulder and it didn't really hurt, its just a little stinging. You've probably had a worse sunburn. And if you've had kids, its a joke compared to that.

I had one on my foot ten years ago, not sure if I could go through the pain again?
I personally would describe the sensation as glass cutting with a buzz.
Pain is all down to the individual take a pain killer before you get it done, and do not go around the time of your period as you will feel the pain even more!
There is one thing that no one mentions about tattoos and that is that there are itchy!

I have four tattoos. One on my stomach, one on my right shoulder, one on my lower back, and one on my ankle. The one on my ankle hurt the worst. The closer to the bone, the more its going to hurt. It kinda feels like you're being stung over and over and over the same spot. It DOES hurt and it does take a couple of days to heal depending on where you get it and how big. The one on my lower back is pretty big and it bled ink for a couple of days. My back was really sore for like a week but after that it was fine. The other ones felt perfectly fine after they were done. I have to warn you that they are addictive though. I'm not sure why but once you get one it's hard not to get another.
