I made over $500 last month doing mystery shopping. It worked for me!!!
Mystery shopping is when a company hires you to spy on their employees for them (in the most general sense). Sometimes I do site visits and make sure companies are in compliance, sometimes I eat at restaurants and evaluate servers, cleanness and food and other times I do things like apartment shops and boat shops . . . and pretend interested.
The best way to start out (which is what I did) was by joining a site (for the free trail) like sassie mystery shopping. They'll send you sneak peeks of lots of jobs in your areas . . .
Then they'll try to get you to pay to become a gold member. Wait until they offer you one week free. Join it and mark your calendar to cancel it at the end of the week before they charge you.
In that week’s time you will get many offers to many LOCAL agencies. You will also have access to sassies mystery shopping companies. During that week sign up with as many of them as you can. Sassie themselves have several company that work for them directly.
Then when you cancel your membership you're just cutting out the middleman . . . which most companies prefer to do anyways.
GOOD LUCK TO YOU!!!

I have done several mystery shopping assignments myself. Those that I have done are dining related. They only reimbursed me up to certain amount. For the example, the assignment is to eat at ABC restaurant for lunch on a certain date. While I am dining there, there are things that I need to observe and then fill out a report when the dining is over. When that day comes, I would need to be there for lunch; but prior to going, I would preview the report to see what exactly I need to observe. And of course, whether before, during, or after the assignment, I cannot reveal to anyone there that my reason of being there. As a mystery shopper, you are asked to be there just as a usual customer; you are not supposed to be over-critical or be too easy. You are just there the way you normally would. Depending on the assignment, you may need to do something really specific in order to make your assignment count. All these specifics will be specified in the report (that's why it would be wise for you to preview the report prior to going).
And also, they would only reimburse you up to certain amount for your deal. And usually, that amount is quite reasonable. You will need to provide a copy of the receipt in order to get your reimbursement check.
It is COMPLETELY FREE to be a mystery shopper. However, it is true that there may be web sites out there who would charge you a fee to provide you a list of mystery shopping service providers. For more information, please visit the Mystery Shopping Providers Assocation web site at http://www.mysteryshop.org.

As some have said most of them are scams. A young lady from the state where I live lost about 6,000 dollars. I'd stay away from them.
I had even thought of trying it, until I did more research.
Good luck to you...
