Always keep yourself protected on a hike. I carry pepper spray for a reliable and legal form of self defense. I also keep one of those tiny air horns. They're so loud, and a GREAT alert for any bad situation.
Always stay together...don't wander off to see something by yourself..make your buddy come with you..even to pee in the trees.
Importantly, don't act naive or vulnerable. Threatening men pray on a weak person. They're looking for an easy catch..not someone who is going to kick, scream, and fight back. Make sure you're always "on guard", aware of your surroundings, and ready to kick him in his balls or poke his eyes out. Those hurt the worst.
Usually men on the trail aren't looking to hurt you.. especially if your hiking during the day on a known trail where there are other hikers. So don't assume every man on the trail is out to get you. Just say hello, and continue along..they're probably just hiking, too. And so many honest men hate to be looked at like they're rapists.. so don't size up every guy walking on by. Makes them feel like crap
Take it easy, and enjoy your hikes!

Most men are not rapists, no matter how attractive a woman is or how vulnerable.
I run along the hiking and cycle paths where I live and run into this situation often.
I must look scary to certain women when I am in my running gear.
I make a point of never acknowledging any single women I see along the path unless they acknowledge me first.
I have a wife and three daughters, and I would never under any circumstances rape a woman. In fact, if I saw something like that happening I would be certain to attack the rapist, and they would wish the cops got to them first.
I would hope that any decent man would do the same for my daughters or wife.
If a man gives you reason to be cautious, then keep your guard up and be ready to react aggressively. Otherwise stay home if you can't feel confident and secure enough to walk unprotected along the trails.
But keep your head up and be aware, would be attackers can always spot their potential victims that lack the confidence to resist them.

site visitors coincidence fatalities interior the U. S. for 2010 were 32,788 people. The Appalachian path killed 4 people in 2011. The fifty 4 Fourteeners in Colorado killed 10 people in 2010. once you've an pastime in a more suitable distant trekking section than the Appalachian path, then hike the Colorado path or Continental Divide path, both being a lot less occupied by skill of people than the Appalachian path and, for my area, more suitable dramatic and captivating. in case you'll experience safer, carry a cannister of submit to spray to apply on the people. even if, stay off the roads interior the U. S..

Keep on hiking? Invite them to skinny dip with them in the nearest lake? Your question isnt really clear- why would women hiking past some men be a problem?

How many males?
I don't know, if it was myself and another friend, we'd probably keep on hiking, but be a bit more aware of what was going on around us. I don't think we'd take the longest trail however..

youre going to have to be more specific. if they try to harass you you tell them to back off or jump kick their manhood. if they try to have a good time with you and seem nice then run away because theyre probably too nice. btw i hope u mean ur question just as a random statment and not some kind of a "evil man" statment because just running into guys doesnt necesarily mean ur going to get raped or killed or somthing. it could happen just the same with women except women dont just kill you, they mutilate you. so if there are men on the trail i would thank god that they arent women.

I guess, if it were me, I'd mention that your boyfriends are just off the trail, "using the facilities" so to speak. I'd also be sure to have a stick with me in my hand at all times (you never know what kind of animal you would need to defend yourself from) and make sure they know you can handle yourself. Mention that you told the guys you'd scout ahead, to make sure things were safe. It may give the indication that you can deal with nearly anything. Also, pray. :)

Are these males brandishing weapons or making lewd remarks or gestures? If not then say "Hi" and hike on girls!

I carry bear spray so if they get frisky I'd willingly give them a shot between the eyes
