Not to confuse the issue, but there is also a bass guitar. This is a guitar with 4 thick strings, but a guitar body. As the other person says, the bass guitar also plays very low notes.

Bass has 4 strings, guitar has 6 or more. The sound of a bass is one octave lower than a guitar. Guitars are typically a little smaller, as well.

night and day. in general, the bass is used to keep the beat while a guitar can be the lead "beat maker". of course there are different guitars like the rythym guitar that kinda enhances the leads notes. but think of the bass and the drums as being partners, the organ and the rythym guitar as partners and the singer and the lead guitar partnering. all together, in general, is what makes a band play music.

they come from two different families in musical instruments. guitar has come down from the lute family which, i believe to be a form of percussion (you hit/pluck the strings), and bass would be considered part of the voilin family. classical guitar is still considered percussion.
the electric version of each are a relatively new addtion to instruments.

They are two different instruments. What's the difference between a clarinet and a flute? A trumpet and a tuba? A snare drum and a timpany?
