This gets into the same territory the people who don't believe in William Shakespeare's existence do; there's more evidence that both he and Homer existed than not. Although it's harder to assemble individual records from 2800 years (Homer's heyday, and the agreed-upon origin date of the written Iliad and Odyssey) than 400 years ago (a la' Shakespeare), it's even harder to accept a consensus of several poets being "Homer".

Consider how hard a collaboration is to put together today, and you have some inkling of how that would have been an impossible mishmash in Homer's time.

Some believe that the Iliad and Odyssey may have been something of an amalgamation. Seeing as it is widely accepted that Homer was blind and that his tales were told through oral tradition, that makes it more likely that the tale was changed as it was passed from person to person, generation to generation. Thus, the story of the Iliad and/or the Odyssey are likely based on an original of Homer, but due to it being passed by word of mouth before being written, it probably had other people involved. Thus, while it is attributed to Homer, it more likely is a combined work.

I was also taught that "Homer" was actually a group of Greek poets, that developed such works as the Iliad and the Odyssey
over a period of years or centuries. There was no such individual
man,he was a composite of many. Still, there's no way to know for sure after all this time so maybe it's not actually a fact-more of an opinion.

No one can know for sure; that was almost 3,000 years ago. Some scholars believe that the Iliad and Odyssey were written at different times, so were not written by the same person. There is still a lot of debate and discussion going on; there is no "fact."
