Last time it happened to me I smacked my wife with my flipper.
I sleep on top of the fridge now.

Well, I actually studied this in science and many times it is because you have ate something before you slept..This causes a reaction where you have a dream that your going to fall or something, and in real life, you do jerk yourself.

this jerking is caused by muscles releasing pent-up energy. Try a good stretching routine before you turn in for the night. It helps me.

I've heard that it's because your brain thinks you're dying so it sends some signals to different parts of your body to get them moving...
Not sure how true or scientific that is, but it's what I've always been told.

My husband drives me nuts doing this. I think we have narrowed his down to sugar or caffeine before bed. Tea is horrible, sweet or unsweet makes him jerk so I think it's the caffeine.

are about to fall asleep. It alerts you in case you do not or should
not want to fall asleep.

Yeah, that happens to me quite often. It happens to my fiance even more than me, and sometimes he moves so suddenly and so big that it scares the crap out of me! I don't know why the body does it though...

i have that also, though i dont know why. it happens when i start to dream but i'm not fully asleep. like i'll dream about a ball or something speeding toward my face then i jump, and it wakes me up.
