My husband and I have been together for 10 years, married for 2 and in our house for 2. The problem is that we both make very modest salaries (under $70,000 total) and although we do have a small savings we're worried about the financial strain of starting a family...

The flip side is that I may have fertility issues and we want to get started as soon as possible so that we have plenty of time to try if needed.

I'm curious what other people have done in our situation...because we're not doing anything...

I'm not gonna lie, but I have two girls, 4 and 5 (4 yr. old is disabled) and I manage to take care of them on 28,100/yr. If I can do that...you'll do just fine.

If you have fertility issues, just managing to have a baby will give you the drive to make it work with your finances. Just be ready to completely give up your freedom or have alot of family and close friends to give you a break from time to time.

Good Luck.

It's a very personal decision, but here's the thing I'd shoot for:

have enough finances ready that you can afford to stay home with the baby as long as you want to, if at all possible.

I wish someone had told me that prior to our first child, because being a stay-home mom became extremely important to me and my H too. It might not be for you, but you really can't say for sure before you hold that little person in your arms. I thought I would "always" put career first, and I did a 180.

Ultimately you won't care so much about finances as long as you can get by, but you'll care very much about your kids. You're doing fine.

Best wishes on whatever you decide!

There is no doubt that if you want to have a baby you should have health, wealth and happiness along with help in the house if possible. But you see mother hood is a GOD GIVEN GIFT all cannot and will not become mothers naturally so they adopt. to have children before 35 is very good because you are young healthy and fit and produce a healthy baby and to take care of them in time of need. But a lot of responsibility comes along with the kid you will have to sacrifice a lot of your time and pleasures, for which you will be rewarded later .you will come to enjoy the natural joy which is boundless from your child ,which cannot be bought with money. So go ahead and be done with it,if both of you agree.Wishing you both all the success in bringing a healthy and happy child into this wonderful world of ours.

start building a 401 k or use the equity on your house to save for a child. I mean 1 child!! try now for 1 and wait a few years after he/she is born to see if u can afford another. Otherwise, 1 is better than none! right?

When you have children, finances are always gonna be an issue. Bills are gonna be around forever, so you have to do the best with what you have. If you two are emotionally ready, then go for it. You seem to have all your ducks in a row- married, house, decent money.

my opinion only:

there is never a "good time" to start a family. yes money is important as well as age but thats not all. i dont know ages but youve been married for 10 years and have a house - i would say you are ready from that perspective - for whats its worth.......... Go for it

no ones getting any younger - good luck.
