I can only really speak to people I've seen in my lifetime--So maybe Bob Gibson or Sandy Koufax are as great as people say, but I don't know...
If you said Pedro, you're kidding yourself. If you said Clemens, you're answering the wrong question, and if you said Ryan, you're overly sentimental.
In my lifetime, I have never seen anyone be as lights-out in a big spot as Orel Hersheiser was when he put the Dodgers on his back and led them to a ring. Everyone remembers Kirk gibson, and I'll give him all the credit he deserves, but they won that year because of Orel, and I'll take him back then over anyone pitching today.

Bob Gibson - if you had to play a game 7 of the world series this the guy you would want to start. A 1.89 World Series ERA with a 7-2 record and 8 complete games. Two time World Series MVP.
Saw him pitch when I was a kid and he was the most intimidating pitcher ever.

Lynn Nolan Ryan, Jr. (born January 31, 1947) is a former pitcher in Major League Baseball who played for a record-tying 27 years and still holds many major league pitching records, some of which are so far beyond previous marks they are likely to stand for years and generations of pitchers to come. He was most noted for his blazing fastball and his longevity, routinely throwing pitches exceeding 100 mph, even into his 40s. The media tagged him "The Ryan Express", referencing a 1965 action-adventure film called Von Ryan's Express.
He is considered by many to have been one of the hardest-throwing pitcher of all time. Ryan was an eight-time MLB All-Star, and his 5,714 career strikeouts ranks first all-time. Given the nature of modern pitching, with starters seldom going beyond 100 pitches (or about six innings), and the gap between Ryan's record and second place, it is difficult to see how the record could be broken. Ryan also is the all-time leader in no-hitters with seven; three more than any other pitcher. He also is tied with Bob Feller for the most one-hitters with 12.
today i would have to pick Johan Santana with Mariano Rivera closing the sandman yanks in 06

Walter Perry "the large prepare" Johnson began his career in 1907 for the Washington Nationals (it is now the Minnesota Twins) the position skill replaced into his distinctiveness being generic to pitch over 100 miles in accordance to hour however there replaced into no longer kit decrease back then to solidify the rumors. He had twelve years of 20 pastime win seasons even as stretching a span of 10 years in a row or perhaps gained better than 30 video games 2 consecutive years. He gained the Triple Crown 3 cases, 411 video games gained (record), one hundred ten shutouts (record), pitched fifty six consecutive scoreless innings (later damaged in 1968, and 1989), and three,509 strikeouts which on the time replaced into 800 better than everybody else. I'm gonna say Pedro Martinez. Contrary to the "you're kidding yourself" comment above, no pitcher in the "steroid" era has done what he's been able to do. If you compare his #'s to the offensive averages of the time and do the same with the Bob Gibsons and Sandy Koufax's of History, Pedro comes out on top. I think he's well past his prime now and wouldn't even put him on my top 10 based on his current ability, but in his prime, the best.
