First, see what came with your laptop. Review the manual. You should see one or two small covers on the bottom that are held in with a tiny screw. You can open that.

Look up your laptop and model number at this website.
http://www.coastmemory.com They should show you what CAME with it, and what the MAXIMIUM amout that it will hold. They do accept returns if it does not work out. They are great to deal with.

I recommend that you GO FOR THE MAX, even if that means that you discard the memory that came with your laptop.

First thing is to find out what kind of memory your laptop has. You can do this by checking the book that came with the laptop or the specs on the manufacturer's website.

Then purchase some from a place like http://www.newegg.com or http://www.tigerdirect.com.

Laptops have access to their memory on to bottom. Usually a panel held in by one screw. Open that up and pop in your memory. You may want to check that first to see if you have any available slots (i think laptops only have 2 slots).

My old laptop had a small flap on the bottom side that I had to unscrew to reveal the memory location. Check with your laptop manufacturer where the opening is. Get RAM that'll match your motherboard's needs and snap it in. This is a relatively simple task that even a novice can handle. Bringing it to an "expert" will probably cost more than the RAM itself.
