No. They decompose after time with your body (if you are buried) brass fittings etc, stay in the ground. They burn the whole coffin when you are cremated, and remove brass fittings from the ashes. They can then be given to the family.
My moms an undertaker, its a conversation we've had before :-)

The longevity of the coffin is determined by how long it takes the materials it is made of to decompose. For most coffins, that is considerably longer than it takes the body inside to decompose.
If you want the coffin to last longer (for whatever reason), get one with less organic material and more man-made textiles.

No!!!! I worked in the funeral trade. Coffins are made out of chipboard and the handles are nothing but plastic. Depending on the soil will depend on how long the coffin will last in the ground - clay - will rot really quick - sand - a bit longer to rot!

Yes they do... and so far not one has been returned. To bad we cant get that kind of a gaurantee on our cars.
