I have a 1 year old son. He is just starting to eat table food. I want to make sure he eats the healthiest diet possible and not to turn to junk. Can you please give me some suggestions for foods that are very healthy (other than fruits and veggies :) Thanks!!

At 1 your baby has a pretty open palate for tastes. I would honestly make baby the same food you eat, just add spices or seasonings AFTER you take babies out to mash and cool. Follow the food guidelines and you will do fine.

It is a confusing time because convenience and finger foods seem to win out over baby eating a fully balanced meal but consider that a 1/4 piece of poached chicken breast, 1/2 a boiled potato, 1/2 slice whole grain toast and a spoonful of veggies is a VERY well balanced meal for baby.

When baby is fussy and doesn't want to eat I make a wonderful smoothie, fruits (fresh or frozen), yogurt, wheat germ and whole milk for texture blendered up. Who can resist and it's healthy!!

Try feeding baby what you like, what you eat and you will have a much easier time coming up with healthy meals to satisfy both of you.

If you are already feeding him a variety of fruits and veggies, you are off to a great start. Unless you are a religious vegetarian, it is fine to start him on meat and poultry. Many doctors advise holding off on fish for another year or so. Keep the pieces very small and soft at first, even if he only has a few teeth. Baked tofu is a terrific source of protein. My son loves cottage cheese. I have yet to meet a noodle product any kid won't eat. And rice, of course. If you feed yourself healthfully, feed your son the same foods. No need to under season or cook anything special -- kids like variety, just like you.

boiled lean meats, or pressure cooked is even better since the meat falls apart more.

enriched noodles (toddlers generally dont enjoy sauce, although you can try it). rice.

Whole grain breads, where the grains are very finely chopped, or powdered like in the new whole grain breads.

Small cut up portions of whatever you're eating.

Just remember you're teaching him how to eat healthy for the rest of his life. Everything you can expose him to now will help ensure he has a wide palette and appreciation for textures and tastes.

If he has teeth and is eating solids, i dont see why he cant have real food and not just baby food from gerber.

We were all eating solids and whole milk by 6 months, and dear God if we didnt all survive without allergies.

Fruits and veggies are of course very important. Other foods you can feed are yogurt, eggs (if he's not allergic), and crackers. My daughter had no teeth at that age yet, so her source of meat came from the Gerber 3rd foods.

anything soft. No peanut butter until 1 1/2 years old. But peanut butter is a healthy snack.Like you said, apples, oranges, any kind of fruits or veggies is great.

They say to make sure they're getting 5 servings of fruits and veggies a day. You can't go wrong then! They have those wonderful gerber graduates!!

My baby was brought up vegetarian. She did have eggs at that age. Would really suggest that you go to the library and research this as some foods fed to young children are thought to cause allergies later in life. Read lots.

Feed him the same things that you eat. I used to give my son Pedialite milk . It's kind of like Ensure. And also the Gummy Bear Vitamins just to make sure he received all of his vitamins.

my son loved vienna sausages, but he had teeth, so that would be a good snack. fruits and veggies are great but he needs infant sized portions of real food just to stimulate his taste senses.
