You can't. Just accept the memories as wonderful blessings and take them with you. The pain will still be there but you can be thankful that you had the time to spend with them and make memories. It's ok to love someone even if they aren't around. It's human.

If they were pleasant memories which I think they are since you said it was your closest friend, then they will fade with time. I know that it can be painful at times when memories come to mind and bring tears to your eyes but as time goes on it will be less and less painful for you to bear.

If your memories are good ons, why would you want to be free of them? If you lost your friend and really cared for him or her, the hurt is a good thing. it shows just how much you cared. Unfortunately, only time will decrease the "bad parts" and help you retain the "good ones". One thing you can try is: Thought redirection. When a bad thought pops up, try replacing it with a good one of that person. Again, in time, the good ones will become more prevalent.

I'd watch Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind with Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet. It's about a guy who falls in love with a disasterous ending, and begins to erase his memories, but during that process, he doesn't want to anymore.

you can't be unless you are very forgetful like me. is it that you want to forget and why would you? maybe you can just tuck it way down deep so that you don't think about your friend too much. i lost my closest friend and i can't help but think about him everyday. his loss was so painful and difficult, but i don't want to be free of his memory, even though it hurts to think of this loss it warms me to remember what we meant to each other.

You didn't specify whether or not your friendship is over due to a tiff, she moved or died. Sometimes time is the best healer.
