Hell no! Just learn how to use it to its fullest potential and it'll be your best friend. My TI-89 was my best friend next to MATLAB in all my math and engineering classes in college.

You don't need a calculator that advanced for high school. It would be fine to use it at home to check your answers, but you shouuld learn how to do problems without it. I teach college mathematics and on some of the tests I do not allow the use of a calculator. I do this since I know that some use the calculator as a crutch. You teacher in high school may do the same, so I would suggest a TI-82 or a TI-83 for your class.
Also, one thing to note about a TI-89, it will give an answer in the form that you want, but most teachers require you to show work, so this could get you into trouble.

Yes it is. If you depend on it for more than checking your work, you will not learn important concepts that you will need in the future. Also, avoid using it on tests. It is probably against the rules, and you will not know how good you are at the math as long as you use that advanced calculator as a crutch. Good luck!

HEY man! What kind of WUSSY high school are you going to?
It'll probably do things that you are supposed to learn how to do without a calculator. Because, uh ... you know ... when civilization ends and there are no more batteries.
I'm scared.
