Its probably old. Old batteries dont hold charges for very long. Same goes for cell phones.
Get a new one.

Laptop batteries do not last for very long when you are disconnected from the main power supply, but 2 mins is a bit low and it sounds like you need a new one.
I have just bought a new laptop and when I was researching the best one I noticed that the average usage on batteries was approximately 2 to 3 hours. They can last longer or less depending on what you are doing.
The best bet is to get a secondary battery which you can carry with you and just replace it when you need to.
Also every now and then let the battery completely discharge i.e. keep the laptop on till it switches itself off due to lack of power, then give it a full charge. This helps the battery last longer.

Don't go out and buy a new one just yet, your battery could be suffering from the "memory effect" or "digital memory effect" depending on what type of battery you have. Try charging/discharging it completely first:
For WINDOWS ME, WINDOWS 2000, WINDOWS XP
Click on start, setting, control panel, then double click the "power options" icon and go to the "power" tab or "power schemes" tab and set the "Low Battery Alarm" to less than 5% and set "Critical Battery Alarm" to less than 3% and/or set power scheme to "always on".
Next, fully charge the battery then shutdown and restart but before windows loads, repeatedly press F8 until only a black screen with text appears (Note: If Windows starts normally, you have to restart and try again.)
Choose "Safe Mode" when prompted for a choice
Unplug the A/C from the computer
Leave computer as is until it shuts down by itself, fully discharging the battery. Once discharged completely, reboot computer normally and restart the process at least 3 times and after the 3rd and final time, restore your power option settings to the way they were before. If this doesn't work, then your battery is dead and you should either get it refilled or purchase a new one. Keep in mind that even if you buy a brand new one, most batteries only have a certain amount of shelf life so it's possible that it will not be at 100% (or even at 50% depending on how old your laptop is) even if it's never been used and brand new, and if you get your old one refilled, your laptop might still recognize your newly refilled battery as the old one so you'll still have to charge/discharge the new battery (as instructed above) for the laptop to recognize the full capacity of the battery.
explanations of both memory effect issues can be found at the link below

How old is it?
After about a year all rechargable batterys loose their ability to hold charge. As the months tick by the amount of charge it holds gets lower and lower until its no longer any good.
You need to replace the battery, if its brand new then I would say its faulty and you can get it replaced under warranty.
All batterys be it Lithium Ion or Nikel Cadium have a set number of charge cycles, this is just an estimate and it can go over that but once you do the capacity is reduced, normally about 1000 cycles.

You probably have to buy a new battery. Recharable batteries get old and worn out over time. It is very normal for batteries over a year old, especially in laptops, get worn out and just not hold a charge anymore. Bring your old battery into like a BestBuy or something, and ask if they have a battery for that model. I hope this helped, and good luck!

It may not be the battery, it might be the power settings in your computer while on battery. Try this
Close all the programmes and right click while mouse pointer on your empty desktop. Click properties and click screen sacer and click power button down there. Now you will see many options for your laptop when its on batteries, choose whatever you want. Hope this might solve the problem.
If this does not then you need to change your battery.
Good Luck!

This happened to the spare battery on my work laptop. I contacted support, and they recommended that I just leave it on charge for 48 hours, as it seemed to be suffering from something known as the "memory effect".
I was sceptical, but I did as they said...it cured the battery completely!
