Depending on where you are located, in the country, you may need concrete footings or just simple gravel footings. The deck posts need to be on some type of hard surface. You can dig the round hole then pour a small pad of concrete (in bags) 4" thick, approx. 18" square. Make it level, then set your post on it. In some areas you can get by using a 4" thick base of gravel instead of the concrete. Good Luck

marks3kids has the right answer, but another way is to dig a hole 18" round or square and 2 to 3 ft. deep depending on your location, coat the bottom of your posts (the part that will go in the ground) with a tar type paint, like driveway sealer or roof paint to prevent them from rotting, center them in the holes and fill with cement.

They keep your deck from sinking into the ground. Many people think this is a good thing, what's your take on it?
