In the republic of Ireland. A field next to a house that I am looking at, nobody seems to know who owns it.

Go to a solicitor and ask for him to request Office Copy Entries at the Local Land Registry - the name of the owner will appear on this document.

I can tell you how to do it here in the US, perhaps Ireland would have a similar process. The county government in your area should have records on who owns the land, either through documents registration or through the tax collector's office.

Here in the US you can find out the owner of land by the tax records which are public records.

Find out who is paying taxes on the land.

I'm assuming the city or state bureau of land should know who owns it. They normally keep track of such things

In the Uk its the Land Registry but not sure if they cover Eire>

Is it listed in the Doomsday book? Seriously... check at the county offices... somebody there can point you in the right direction.
