Chem sponge/Soot sponge/dry clean sponge will remove soot particles from hard furniture then use water and Murphy's oil soap to finish. You want to be careful to remove the soot first as it will turn to a mild acid and damage the finish if you don't remove the soot first. I've seen the sponge, which resembles a gum eraser at Home Depot in their paint department.

An oil based cleaner like murphy's or even old english polish should take care of the problem. It might take several cleanings, but it's a lot better then buying new furniture!

Sellotape (sticky tape) residue on white painted furniture came off easily using olive oil, with no harm to the finish. May need 5 minutes before rubbing off with paper towel. I used the plastic cap as well which worked a treat as a non marking scraper. Peter
