I use a product called Iron Out (http://www.ironout.com/) I use it at the cabin because we have such hard water. I fill the sink (I also use it in the bathtub and toilet) with water and pour in some iron out and let it sit. My advise is to close the door and turn on the exhaust fan and let it do it's magic. Come back about 15 mins later (more if the stains are really bad) and a light scurbbing takes it away.

Try using the product called "The Works". They make several different products but the toilet cleaner is the strongest and can be used in the sink as well as the toilet. However, be extremely careful. Keep your face away because when the solution comes in contact with the rust, a chemical reaction occurs and it starts to smoke. Also, if you have a porcelain sink, rinse immediately as soon as you see the rust disappear. Corrosion will occur.

I have the same problem I get rust stains in my sinks, toilets, and bathtubs, I use a product called The Works. It is made for rust stains. You can purchase at wal-mart, or Dollar general. You can also purchase The Works drop in for the toilet tank. It really works. It Is very strong, be sure to wear rubber gloves, and leave bath door open, the smell is strong!

Rust should be gone. for the sink, fill with water or to cover the rust stain and do the same thing. it will need to sit about 30 mintues. hope this helps you, it has done wonders for me.

Rust stains come from iron in the water supply, which can only be permanently remove through installation of an iron filter. Occasionally iron is dissolved from rusting water pipes or mains by corrosive water. Iron stains can be removed by a weak acid solution, usually oxalic acid which is highly toxic and must be handled with care. Never use chlorine bleach as this sets the iron stain.
Fresh iron stains on plumbing fixtures such as sinks, bathtubs and chrome will generally yield to treatment with heavy duty cleaning compounds containing large proportions of trisodium phosphate. Apply cleaner with damp cloth, pad or sponge. Rub discolored surface until stain is removed. Rinse. Wipe dry and polish.
Heavy, stubborn rust stains can often be removed by oxalic acid stain remover compounds such as Zud or a tri- chloro-melanine compound such as Barkeepers Friend. Follow directions carefully.
For rust stains already set on bathroom or kitchen plumbing fixtures, dissolve oxalic acid crystals in hot water and add enough whiting or talc to make a soft paste. Apply this poultice to stain and let dry before removing. Rinse and polish.
Use with care: It is poisonous.

There is a product you can buy at your local wal-mart. It's called whink. It works wonders on rust stains. All you need to do is spray the stain and watch it disappear before your eyes! You may have to turn off the toilet water and flush, so that the liquid actually gets to the stain.

CLR - It's the best thing commercially available and it gets the stains off with relative ease which is always nice for the person doing the cleaning.

"Once a monthe sprinkle a layer of Tang Breakfast Drink or lemon Kool Aid on the sides of the toilet and in the water, leave for one hour, brush and flush. Repeat if necessary. (For those of you who are wondering, citric acid oxidizes the rust.)"
