Why does there have to be a conspiracy theory as to why certain pictures don't win the Best Picture Oscar, including Brokeback Mountain?

Hey, I'm not a huge fan of the Academy Award decisions over the years (for example, I detested Million $ Baby, which won), by why did people react as if BBM was far-and-away the best film last year.

I thought it was a very good film, but so were Crash, Capote, Good Night..., and Munich. I think a certain % of voters may have voted against it because of its subject matter, but that a certain % (maybe even a higher one) voted for it for the same reason.

BBM received a lot of nominations and a lot of awards -- I just don't agree that it was ripped off by the Academy.

honestly, i liked the movie, but i don't believe it deserved best picture. it was a touching love story, however, due to the society that we live in, the powers that be didn't appreciate it because it was about a homosexual relationship. look at if these walls could talk II. that was a touching story, but there really wasn't a lot of hype around it.

it is a good movie, and truthfully to me, if it were about a heterosexual couple, i still wouldn't believe that it would deserve best picture.

Crash on the other hand, was a very touching and inspirational movie. a movie that would deserve best picture. had the focus in brokeback mountain been about the cruelty that is suffered by choosing to be open with your homosexuality, then maybe that would have been something to consider. and although there was a part in the movie showing a cruel act of violence, that was not the focus of the movie.

The big wigs at hollywood still want to keep gays in the closet and they don't want to disturb the big boys on capitol hill. They play into each others hands and didn't really want to open that can up right away. It would have meant having to openly admit that there is nothing wrong with being a gay cowboy in love, however the conservatives chose a different approach in their censoring of the "wood" this past go around.

Personally, because I thought it wasn't deserving. It didn't strike me as being a classic, as Best Pictures should always be.
I think the vote may have been split, which allowed Crash to win it. Also, Crash is an ensemble piece - an actors' acting movie, which the Academy always loves. And there's also the case that it's about racism in a fresh way.

Great movie, great acting, cinematography, etc. But it just wasn't Crash. The message in Crash was great, and the movie was done so well. Had everything.

Though Brokeback was great, it was a bit hyped up. I was glad to see a gay movie liked so well by the public, shows the times are changing, good to see.

Because the old farts that have all the voting power are a bunch of scared wimpy no balls homophobes!!WE get it Racism is alive and well, would'nt it be great if we can show 2 gay people in love instead of portraying them all as whores?

does everyone think that it didnt win because people are homophobes. Why cant we just admit that the movie sucked. Why does it have to win because it touched on a gay issue, does that make a good movie? It didnt win because it was not good enough, that is all.

Probably for image sake. It is a movie about homosexual men. I personally would have liked to see it win. I think that we are not quite there yet with acceptance obviously. Too bad.
