Most of the beaches in Ghana are safe for swimming, though I say this with some caveats. Ghanaians have yet to learn the value of beach front property, consequently the beaches could be much cleaner. Indeed, the water pollution (mostly black poly bags) is something that makes me loathe to swim in the ocean, at least here in Accra as I hate them wrapping around my legs and you never know WHAT was in it. Secondly, unless you're a good swimmer, don't go out too far, as the tides and current are strong here and while tourist beaches may have a lifeguard or two, they are overworked and underpaid, and don't have proper lifeguard stands, just walk the beach. Be aware, most Ghanaians can't swim.

The further out you are from Accra, the cleaner the beaches. Try Keta for relatively unspoiled beauty (though no lifeguards at all). You could also consider going to Ada Foah, which is where the Volta River meets the ocean, very beautiful there.

Good luck.
