A family friend has just been diagnosed with lung cancer (he stopped smoking 20 years ago), it's early stages, what are the chances of survival?

This question can only be answered by an oncologist - there are too many variables for more than a vague answer here.

Lung cancer is a description for the growth of tumors in the lungs. However, these can be caused by different types of cells. Some types are very fast growing, some slower. Some are more likely to metastasize - that is, break off, travel through the blood stream, and lodge in other organs. Once any cancer metastasizes, control and treatment is extremely difficult, if not impossible.

Survival depends on the type of cancer, the progression throughout the lungs, and whether it has metastasized.

only his consultant/oncologist can answer the question
my best friend has had lung cancer for 5 years now, so there is hope for your friend.

Very good these days as it has been caught in its early stages the medical staff can attack it before it does too much damage.
