Motherland is the nation where you live in or a place where you've been influenced by its culture and beliefs. Say for example, a Filipino is working abroad. Whatever the circumstances are or how risky it may seem, that man will make ways on how to get back to his own country,Philippines, his Motherland. Because that is the only place where he can be with people practicing the same culture, speaking the same language in terms of mind and heart. wherever you may go, there's this indispensable bond that keeps shouting in your heart that you will go back to your Motherland. The Land of Promise :)

Motherland is the place where you are from, but is more commonly assigned to larger groups of native people i.e. australia is their motherland. Its also related to 'mother tongue' - the language which you grew up with. One suggestion to the reason for using this term is from the idea that women represent countries in the same way that they supposedly represent nature and the Earth (hence 'mother'land), and that men are the terrirorial 'owners' of these countries. In a similar way, the motherland will represent your maternal origins. You can see metaphors used which relate to this particularly with regards to war.

Represents your home country. Its more associated with Russia by Slavs, even though they may not be born and raised in Russia. Also synonomous with "Fatherland."
