there is no dial-up broadband. There is dial-up, isdn, broadband (cable). So you would need a router to connect from your broadband modem to your pc + laptop, this if u have broadband.
If you have dial-up or isdn you need to make a bridge connection from your main pc to your laptop (the bridge part it's a little complicated).

By dial up broadband, you mean ADSL broadband over a pnone line. Or you mean a 56k dial up modem, with a phone plug, in a phone line.
I think its the first, your just differentiating it from ntl/cablwest/ Cable broadband, which, Does Need a different router, NOT an ADSL one, but an Ethernet one.
Your laptop, if "brand new" will have an ethernet, LAN socket, Like a phone plug, but squarer, like the usa phone plugs.
This is a Direct line into the pc, for joining two together, or attatching a ROUTER, or attatching a MODEM.
You should be able to plug an ethernet cable in the laptop, and directly into the MODEM, by the same type of plug, at either end.
There should be both cables, supplied with pc/modem, one for ethernet, one for diall up, (regular phone plug).
So your MODEM will have a BT phone plug, coming out of it, and one or more ports, "holes" ,for a cables to go IN, These are usually a USB port in, and an ETHERNET port in. You can connect your laptop to the modem, by either USB, or ETHERNET, called LAN. Lan is faster. Most routers, to add more than one pc/laptop to a modem box, will only have LAN inputs, and a Lan output (to modem). Some, may have upto 2 USB, as well, But for PRINTER input, and shareing. Most pc's will now have, whats called a "Nic 10/100 ethernet" card. Its an internal modem, which gives you that ethernet plug port. Some still have the internal 56k modem, with a phone plug port, for fax and old people. So there you go, you dont need a router, just the right lan cable (some a xover, some in line, it makes a difference) It has to be a MODEM Lan cable! If you are real dial up, youve already got a phone line, so go broadband, its painless, easier and cheaper. Use your network set up disk that came with Modem, dont plug in lan etc till it tells you on the install disk. If no disk, web site of ISP for help. Cable modem is as easy as plug in, Menu, "run": inetwiz....follow instuctions. Reeboot. Adsl may require more, as its not technically "Lan" or a local network, as such.

There are many good inexpensive routers available to use with your laptop. By the way there is no such thing as dial up broadband and dial up routers are pretty rare in the consumer market.

there is no such thing as dial up broadband, dial up is using the web with a normal phone line and broadband is using the web with a high speed adsl connection
anyone can use dial up(normally charged at 4p per minute peak,1p per minute off peak),but broadband you need a "broadband enabled"phone line(contact your local phone provider),and a broadband router(you will normally be given a free router when you subscribe to a i.s.p(internet service provider))
your laptop will probally be wi-fi(wireless)enabled so a good broadband package for you would be the latest aol package, take a look at http://info.aol.co.uk/products/index.adp,as you will get a free wireless router with this, and you can use a wired connection also
if you have any problems setting up your connection please do not hesitate and contact me
good luck

read the instruction manual. If it's not included, ask at the shop you brought it. They're a bunch of computer nerds there
