I belive that the saying refers to someone or somebodies being punished. The head rolling comes from when guillotines were used in executions. After the blade fell and decapitated the victim, the head would roll into a basket. Today, I think the saying is used more so to suggest that someone got into trouble for something and the consequences were severe.

It's a saying in reference to the French revalution and the Guillotine. Back then, whenever something went down, there was a mass of beheadings, often times the crowd would play soccor (futbol) with the heads, kicking them around the court.

Hence the expressions, heads rolled.

means they raised hell-someone got in big trouble. Heads will roll, mean again the person is angry and they're gonna chew someone out about the situation.

Example. U make a big mistake at work and the boss finds out-ur head will roll for hit...........He's either goin to fire u, demote u or reprimand u in some way.

Literally, it means people got their heads cut off. That was a common form of punishment a few centuries ago. Now, it usually means that people were fired from their job because of a major screw-up.
Basically, it just means bad, bad consequences of something that happened for which someone can be blamed. (even if the person blamed didn't do it.)

It means whatever it pertains to, the event, i mean, ...it didn't end so pretty. Heads rolled is like a figure of speech, meaning it was a totally wipe-out of a say, party or dance, or speech. Like this....
" How bad was her temper?" " Lemme just put it this way...heads rolled."

The phrase heads will roll means people will be punished, so I guess heads rolled means people were punished.

BTW ... Adolph Hitled is credited with the phrase "heads will roll".

In several European societies, a change in administration involved beheading. So if the king or queen were replaced, they usually lost their heads. It could apply to ordinary people as well.

It was to be taken literally.

Similar to "feathers flew". There was a big argument, or people were really angry. I would use it more as a threat eg "Heads will roll!"

It means that someone (or many people) got into trouble...as in they pissed of the queen and she went all "off with their heads" over what happened!
