I think it's old superstitions and practices. You nail the nail into the door to keep bad spirits out and the penny on the floor to promote prosperity.

Some supernatural answers:
Nail a horseshoe above the door way leading into a home, keep it pointed upwards so as to keep the luck from running out. (They took the horseshoe, left the nail)

"In some countries they nail a wolf's head to the door, to prevent and cure all mischiefs by charms and witchcraft" (Scot, R. The Discovery of Witchcraft, 1665).

These interviews, chosen at random from among the Old Fort Negroes, afford some small glimpse behind the scenes of this section's placid daily routine. They give significance to the penny often seen nailed to the bone-white doorstep and help the outsider to understand the mojo ring or luck piece worn by almost every man, the silver dime tied around many a woman's ankle.

A horseshoe nailed above the inside your front door is thought to keep prosperity in and keep poverty out. The idea is that the horseshoe is like a cup that embraces your good fortune.

A bowl of change by the front door is thought to keep money in your pocket. Old or foreign coins are thought to bring money to the home. (Maybe the bowl kept getting stolen so she nailed a coin to the floor!)

Stick a clove of garlic with nine pins and hang it near the front door to protect you from poverty.

And some not so supernatural:
‘Last year I fooled father by glueing a penny to the floor and saying "Dad you’ve dropped a penny on the floor.’ He couldn’t get it off the ground because it was stuck firm, then I shouted "Yah, April Fool".’

Old Spanish Proverb:
"Creer o Morir"- Believe or Die

Or she could have been trying to get people to say the following:
"Whenever you find a coin on the floor, step on it and say, "Money on the floor, money at the door." Then pick it up and put it in your pocket."

Sounds more like superstition than Wicca. Sort of like nailing a horseshoe above a door for good luck.

I've sorta heard of the penny thing. I believe those are some of those old wives tale superstitions. Some are meant to bring good fortune, luck, money, health...etc. The penny probably has something to do with fortune or money.

Its a sign of Santa! Your grandma's house is possessed by the minions of Santa himself. Little wee elves hammering nails through pennies! Look at them close, if they are all nailed perfectly through the middle, then you've got an elf problem. They are prob using her house to make their toys, for all the good little girls and boys! Run away, run away!!!
