1. Listen for needs. Don't talk about what your product can do; listen to what your customers say they need. Then talk about how your product fills those needs.
2. Ask for the sale. You'd be amazed how many salespeople don't close the deal with a firm call to action. Make sure you ask the person to purchase your product today.
3. Know the competition. Set up your computer to get all news stories in your industry. And research. Know your area and know what the competition is doing. The best salesman is someone who can use his knowledge to help the customer make an informed decision.

Sales is actually the process of problem solving for a potential buyer or enhancing his/her business. Salespeople develop the skills to discover needs and solve problems. Contrary to the viewpoint often held by people who don't understand selling, the most successful salespeople sell by asking questions, not delivering a "spiel" or "talking someone into something they don't need." The old cliché is that a good salesperson can sell sand in the desert. However, the successful salesperson doesn't follow this mentality, but will walk away from a potential order because his/her product/service doesn't help the potential buyer. Good salespeople sell what customers really need.

it's all about the customer, they want you to listen to their stories, not hear about your life.
try to distinguish between what they want and what they need.
i have polled friends, they say it is customer service. if you say you will call a customer back, do it and do it when you said you would, even if you still have no answer to their question.
shop your competition so you know how to answer customer's questions about them. never, never trash your competition and don't be afraid to send your customers them if you don't have what they want. but also, don't be afraid to tell the buyer why your prouct is better than the competition's products, service, follow up, etc.
