How about you try giving it milk in a sippy cup or feeding it to the baby with a spoon, slowly but surely they will come off.

An 8.5 month old is way too young to take off a bottle. They barely have enough coordination to sit up, must less hold even a sippy cup. They need a lot of formula at this age, give it to the baby the easiest way you can! Gad, I didn't even stop breast feeding at 8.5 months! & then he went on the bottle for at least a year after that!
He is now a strong 12 year old, who has been in the 95th percentile or higher his whole life! Never broken any bones either!

Alternate between offering a bottle and a soft spout sippy cup. (Like Avent.)
There's absolutely nothing wrong with your baby still being on a bottle......s/he is not even a year old yet. Go slowly and mostly offer the sippy for practice.

get him some sippys with handles that way he can do it himself..If he is not accostomed to using a sippy this will be more difficult to do at this young age...Let him get used to the sippy then at 12 months take it away completely..Just use the bottle for nap and bedtime until then..

Isn't that a little early to be taking your baby off the bottle?

I swear by Take-n-Toss sippy cups. $2.50 for 4 at Walmart. They are spill proof but have no valve so they are easier to suck.
Great to start with until they learn to take the lid off!!

Cold turkey has always worked best for all my family.
Remove bottle, insert sippy cup. end of struggle.

start with a sippy cup, it worked for me. Give him an empty one at first to play with then put his favorite jiuce in and put it to his mouth. It won't take long for him to catch on!
