so many people have no concept of how government and the economy works. should they be allowed to vote?

for istance, there could be such an overwhelming majority of idoits voting for people that it could potentially cause the economy and governemnt to fall apart.

there are so many people now days that don't have even a basic concept of how the american government works, they don't understand the issues or the jobs of each elected official and the limits of thier power. if they kiss the baby, they get the vote!

you all think there should be some test people have to take in order to be eligible to vote? it would cover government, the branches and thier responsibilties, basic economics and other things.

i beleive that would be good to have so we can have a more informed and educated voting block instead of just some local joe idoit voting because his dad voted and great gran daddy voted democrat so he does also, or Mr Frist kissed my baby so i will automatically vote for him!

I thought those liberal indoctrination centers that are masquerading as public schools are supposed to be teaching basic sh*t like that.

It would be clearly discriminatory. Education is in part a function of economic status and therefore that would affect a person's ability to understand the intricacies of politics.

We already have this test in effect, in that when you get a high school diploma, or even grade school, the school system is saying you have competed the basic requirements in order to graduate. That, in all cases I know would at least cover the functions of government.

That's about as good as it gets and what you have is what you have. This won't change and it is naive of you to think otherwise.

Kissing babies has been done for years and that won't change.
Lastly, why people vote how they do is beyond anyone to judge and you (or me) may just not agree with the voter. It would become, "this guy is clearly more qualified than that one, therefore you must have voted for the wrong reason!"

It might be you who is wrong.

Yes everyone should be allowed to vote. Because the question in this is who decides who is "educated" enough to vote?? It's all a matter of judgment, and that is a dangerous thing to legislate.

It is the responsibility to educate yourself on the issues and formulate your own opinion. Then come the election, cast your vote.

By the way, I have found that the people educated on the issues typically are the ones that don't vote because "it doesn't make a difference anyways". THAT is more frustrating than people not educated on the issues voting. At least they are voting!!!

Here's a remarkably simple way of improving voting... Instead of the punchcard, just have a computer screen with blanks next to the open offices. Have people be forced to type in a name. Any error in the name would automatically be discarded as a failed vote. If you don't know your candidate's name and how to spell it, you simply don't care enough to be able to vote. Period. That shows no undue favoritism (unless literacy is considered undue favoritism, in which case, I guess I am guilty of thinking that's a reasonable pre-requisite for participating in government processes). Any test can always be cited as unfair to one group or another (see the arguments against various questions on the SAT for an example). But just typing a name? Totally fair.

NO! I do not think everyone should have the right to vote. For example...I don't think Felons should have the right to vote..That is how things were supposed to be originally. You commit a felony and you lose the right to vote as well as whatever jail sentence was handed down to you. But today felons are voting from their prison!! Talk about travesty. I spend my whole life keeping my nose clean and these criminals get to have the same rights I do...even though I am law abiding and they are not.
