No, it is not true that the only way you ovulate is by having a period. The only way you have a period is by ovulating. So it is quite possible to suddenly ovulate; if you then *don't* get pregnant, you will have a period 12-16 days later.
However, it is also possible to have vaginal bleeding that is *not* preceded by ovulation. (Technically, this isn't a period, but unless you are charting your signs of fertility, you'll never know the difference.) So bleeding does not necessarily mean that you ovulated.
If you want to know if you are pregnant, you have to either take a home test or see your midwife or doctor. Otherwise, you can second-guess yourself for months!!
If you *aren't* pregnant, please read _Taking Charge of Your Fertility_ by Toni Weschler. The book will show you how to know if you are ovulating, no matter how irregular your cycles are.

You can ovulate without having a period.
I know what it feels like to be scared to take that test. It's so disappointing to want to see two little lines and only see one... especially if you've gotten your hopes up.
My best advice it to just bite the bullet and pee on that stick, girl! If you want to be pregnant and aren't, yes, there may be some pain there. But the sooner you know one way or the other, the better. That way you don't start picking out baby names and planning everything only to find out that you're not pregnant yet. The sooner you can reasonable take the test, the less built up your hopes get, the less pain you may feel if you're not.
I hope things work out the way you want them to!
Good luck and much babydust!

If you've not been getting your periods chances are that your pregnant. sound like it. Dont be afraid to take a test cause if your not pregnant then it could be low red blood cells which causes you to loose your periods in some cases and youd start to feel really tired most of the time. But i really think its important you get a test kit better to be on the safe side dear.

a period is a clear sign of ovulation having had taken place. only a test will tell you if you are pregnant. i can't make an educated guess on that one. if your period is THAT irregular talk to a gynocologist. mine weren't THAT irregular BUT, the doctor would have me take birthcontrol pills for one month and then i would stop taking them. then i would ovulate normally for about 2 months at a time. you can only get pregnant if you are ovulating. call your gyno for an appointment and ask about your options!

You won't know for sure until you take a test of some sort...or wait until you begin showing or feeling it. Go ahead and take the test...that way if you're not preg and want to be, you'll know ya still need to keep trying.

Your body could have ovulated and if so....you would then get a period. If you suspect you are pregnant, try taking a a pregnancy test.

Just take a test. It'll tell you waaay more than any of us can. If the tests come out negative I would go to the doctor.
