Yep. You can name your child whatever you want. You don't even have to give it either of your surnames (though that is the convention). Legally, in the States, you can give your child anyname (at least I believe that is true in all states).

A couple of people on here either have no frigging clue what they are talking about or they mis-interpreted you question. Here is the deal.........Yes you can give the baby his last name, you can even say that hes the father, BUT the laws will not recognize himas the father unless HE signs a paper stating that the child is his or if he refuses then you can demand a paternity test. When my son was born his dad lived in colorado and I in california, my son has his fathers last name!!!! on the paperwork I did before my son was born I put my (now husbands) name on the paper as childs father and 2nd contact in case of emergency. I had no problems with state or otherwise giving my son his last name.....or even "claiming" him as the father!!

My boyfriend and I are not married and we just had a baby 8 1/2 months ago and I gave her his last name. I contemplated on whether to or not but than I asked him what he would prefer and he said he definitely wanted her to have his last name. If you are still on speaking terms with the father you could ask him what he prefers. Also once you know what his reply is you will know what kind of father he is going to be to your child.

You can name a child just about anything you'd like. My sister carries her father's last name, though her mother and father have never married. It shouldn't be a problem legally for you to give the baby his family name.

Yes you can what ever you put on the birth certificate is that child's name. In the hospital though the child will referred to as your last name but after you and the baby are released then he/she will be your hubby last name.

You can name your child anything you like. I do believe that the father has to sign the birth certificate to be listed as father but you can name the child anything.

There isn't any criteria for picking out a name. You can call the kid Jimmy Crack Corn if that's what you want to do. Just be sure that's the name you really want when you fill out the paperwork for the social security administration. After they issue a number, you have to change his name through the court system.

Current laws prevent you from placing someone else's name on the birth certificate. He must be here to sign for it and acknowledge being the father. Unless he comes here and signs, that birth certificate will show no father and the baby will have your last name.
