If you support your local team, so what?
Just by being born there, you haven't necessarily contributed anything to the team.
It's a random fluke of where you happened to be born, or moved to. You don't owe them anything and they don't owe you anything.
Besides which, most of the players are probably only at the club for the wages, or because they were transferred in. If the players don't have any inherent loyalty to the area, why should the area have any inherent loyalty to the players.
I support the team from my birthplace, Preston. However, my connection to the team is no more or less hollow than anyone elses' is to theirs. Wherever they were born.
It's a house of cards built on human ignorance, territorial instincts, and the insecure needs for people to attack he 'glory hunting' fans they're so jealous of.
You can still support a team, just take it all with a pinch of salt.

When I was about 10 (16 years ago) Liverpool were winning everything so I used to say I supported Liverpool because they was obviously the best and my geographical knowledge (being only 10) was pretty poor so I didn't have a clue where they came from anyway! When I got a bit older though I realised that Liverpool is bloody miles away from me and that the biggest Prem team near me was West Ham, also my dad is a WHU supporter as well so it just seemed natural to follow the Hammers from then on.
IRONS!

I'm from Bolton and I've supported Liverpool for nearly 30 years. I've been watching them home and away up and down the country. If I was a glory hunter then I'd probably be a Chelsea fan now but I'm not. My loyalty lies with Liverpool.
I first saw Liverpool in the 1977 European Cup Final and really enjoyed what I saw, that's where me being a Liverpool Fan started.

Gone are the days when football fans are localised - it's megabuck business now and gone global - Man Utd has supporters all over the world - AirAsia has Man U emblazoned all over its planes. Glory seeking is just a part of it but identifying with a winning club with a long tradition of football is innate in man's quest for excellence.

yeah they are, but there will always be a link somewhere.....a mate of mine was from bath and perhaps the most fanatical and loyal liverpool support of all time, why? because when he was a kid liverpool were the first team he ever completed in his sticker album and he has followed them through the up's and down's ever since. My old man is from Brighton and although im from the midlands i still like to see the seagulls do well.....
Some are glory hunters but so what? if your team was flying high and loads of people jumped on the band wagon and started funding the clubs development through shirt sales surley thats a good thing....partically in the case of smaller teams who do well in the FA cup etc.

Why not? Is there some rule by fluke of birth and you're stuck in B'ham you have to support a terribly boring side. Basically, you only "support" music, art, food, etc. from your hometown? Makes no sense.
Maybe they like United because they are entertaining. Sorry, but wins or losses aside, give me bang for my buck (or pound for you lot).
Whatever reason be it your parents, siblings, what side was hot when you were 12, your fave metrosexual footy star, etc., support whatever team you want to.
Why get hung up about it?

you can ask that question about any sport or any athlete, really.
i support argentina cause well, im argentinian....and cause the team is amazing. but i also support portugal (ive never been there), italy (beautiful country!) and spain (never been there either)...why? cause of the talent in the team. i think the players there are great. they work well as a team. they dont try to be hot-shots. lots of reasons.
but then i hate some teams...like germany (dont know any germans and have never visited the country), france (my aunt and uncle live in france and i have visited), and england (been there once. thought it was lame). why do i dislike them? cause i dont think the teams work well together. i think they are over-rated and have over-inflated egos. lots of other reasons here too.

I live in Plymouth but support QPR. That proves that i am not a glory hunter especially as they just missed relegation last year. Still Plymouth now have ian Holloway so they are going down!
However, I do fear for my life on match days!!
