Latex is the best way to write any mathematical expression. You can download and install MikTEX free from the given site. Using this software you can write Latex document and convert it into .ps and .pdf files

The command for square root is
\sqrt [root] {expression}
Here root is optional
for example
$sqrt [3] {x^2 + y^2}$
will output exact maths representaion of 3rd root of x^2 + y^2 in proper maths format

If you are using Microsoft Word, there is an 'Microsoft Equation Editor' object that you can insert. If you just want the square root symbol, then there's WingDings fonts for most things like that.

yes Latex is the way to go. There is a nice gui based Latex composition tool.
I'm not familiar with Mitex, I avoid windows and use Linux and openbsd

Depends which progam you are using.
but basically if a is the number you want then try one of these.
a^(1/2) or a^(.5)
or
a**(1/2) or a**(.5)
or
sqrt(a)
