This depends on what is causing your earache.

1. The only truly safe thing you can do without knowing what is the cause of the earache is to put a warm compress on your ear.

2. An old (but effective) remedy is to put a few drops of warm "sweet oil" (olive oil) in your ear.

3. If your earache is from swimming or getting your ear wet, then a few drops of alcohol will help dry out your ear.

4. If you have cold symptoms with your earache, you can also try taking a decongestant (like Sudafed, or Afrin nasal spray), these can help by opening up a blocked eustachian tube (the little tube that connects your ear to your throat...it can swell shut with a cold).

5. Wax (cerumen) buildup can also cause earaches. There are several over-the-counter drops to soften ear wax. Basically they're a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and water. These are safe to use but NEVER go digging with a Q tip to remove the wax. You could damage your ear that way.

Check with your doctor before taking any new medications and follow the directions on the package.

But, having told you this, I would NOT recommend putting anything in your ear until you know what's causing the pain...as this might make whatever is causing your ear ache worse...especially if it's caused by an infection or if there is a perforation or your eardrum. If you're running a fever (greater than 101) you need to call your doctor.

I'm pretty sure you can only relieve the pain of the earache. If you have an infection, you need antibiotics to clear the infection. Heating pads on low help with the pain, and taking ibuprofen.

Try Isopropyl rubbing alcohol. Sometimes it work, sometimes it doesn't. But to really get rid of an earache, just go to your doctor for a prescription for antibiotics.

A little warm olive oil works. Pointing a blow dryer in the ear works too.
