Because it is a term of endearment..and I would rather be called pumpkin, cupcake, cookie or honey than "fat bastard". Wouldn't you sweetie pie?

Because we tend to forget their actual names... :)
Maybe it is a belief that calling them 'sweet thiings' will help make life that much sweeter. If you look into the meaning of 'honeymoon' it is often said that it is sweet at first, but like the full moon, the sweetness will wear off.
