It's actually always used in pural.... "Go Bananas!", but yes it's like you go crazy, on a tyraid, or completely freak out over something. Like.... "A lady hit my brand new car with a shopping cart and I just couldn't help but go bananas!"

It means to act crazy. There is an old Vaudeville routine with a song 'Yes, We Have No Bananas Today' that makes reference to bananas = crazy. It has nothing to do with any Simpson's episode.

Just like when u step on a banana, it takes you in the direction no-one can predict, your behaviour also changes to an un-predictable one...this is the story behind the anecdote, 'go bananas'

It is a reference of a Simpson's episode, titled Das Bus. It parodies Lord of the Flies. On the bus, Millhouse says, "hey Bart, Race Ya!" and rolls an apple up the aisle. Bart gets a grapefruit, and rolls it up the aisle. During the race, Milhouse yells, "go apple", Bart yells, "go Grapefruit", the Ralphie takes a banana out and places it in the aisle and yells "Go Banana!".
It is a memorable, silly line that we say in our house all the time.,
