Counting the number of days from your period is relative when it comes to fertility because it is only an average based upon women with very regular cycles.
And even women with regular cyles have "off" months. I've had very regular cycles since I was a teen, yet I ovulated verly early (don't know why) last year and now here I am 35 weeks pregnant!
You can only know when you will be fertile by starting to track your cycle now. Basically, the main thing to look for is cervical mucus, which should start out pretty scarce and then get thicker and increase in quantity as you ovulate. You should start to see this mucus secreted right after, or within days of, your period. Even the smallest quantity means you are entering your fertile time. This fertile time will last anywhere from 7 to as much as 12 days, depending on the woman, and you would have intercourse every other day to maximize your chances.
Conversely, after you ovulate, the mucus will become scarcer and then you will experience "dry days." At this time, you are very infertile, and it is very rare to get pregnant. Checking your basal body temperature each morning also tells you that you are past ovulation because your temp will rise in an upward pattern.
A woman's fertility is so much more complex than just "14 days after your period or 14 days before the next." If you'd like more info about tracking your fertility and also need more tips on maximizing your chances of becoming pregnant, check into the Couple to Couple League. They are great and sell lots of good books, supplies, etc. WWW.CCLI.ORG
The book on all this is called The Art of Natural Family Planning (bet you could find it real cheap on Ebay!). My husband and I have used the method with 100% effectiveness for three years now. It can help you conceive, or space the next child if you have good reasons for doing so.

No, it is not. Right before your period, you absolutely *cannot* get pregnant, and it is not very likely right after your period, either. (That will work if you have short cycles, but otherwise not.)
A woman ovulates about 2 weeks (typically 12-16 days) before her *next* period. Sperm can live in the female body up to 3-5 days if conditions are right (they will die before they can fertilize an egg otherwise). The egg only lives for a few hours.
So you have to have sex in the few days (for some women, the day or two) before ovulation. If you have 32 day cycles, for instance, you will probably ovulate between days 16 and 20 of your cycle.
For more details, and to learn how to determine when you are ovulating and fertile, read _Taking Charge of Your Fertility_ by Toni Weschler.

It's generally about 12 to 16 days before your period arrives. Your first hint of being fertile clear cervical mucus. Try using ovulation predictor kits from your local drug store.

if your period is a regular 28 day cycle, then you should be trying on the 13th, 15th and 17th day after the first day of your last period. this gives the sperm a chance to "re-up" and you are right in the middle of your cycle. if you have irregular periods, i would suggest an ovulation test, or you can go to your doctor and they can help you plan it out.

Your best day will vary according to how long or short your typical cycle is. There are websites that can help you track your fertility, tell you when you have ovulated and advise when you should take a pregnancy test according to that information. I prefer www.fertilityfriend.com. It helps me keep track of everything and offers advise and also flags uncommon data in your chart. Good luck! Hope everything works out for you. :o)
