There will be a bill from your caregiver, a bill from the hospital and if you have drugs there may be yet another one from the anaesthesiologist. (Not sure...never had a labor with meds but I *think* they may bill separate from the hospital.) Of course a medicated birth or a c/s will cost more than an unmedicated birth. If you have a boy and choose to circumcize him (please DON'T) that would be extra as well. (I think we were told $200?)
Only one of my three was born in a hospital. For that birth, I think that the OB charged about $2000 (we paid about $800 and insurance paid the rest) and the hospital was also about $2000 (which I don't think we paid much on).
For our birth in a freestanding birth center, the total was about $2400.
For our homebirth we paid $2000 in advance and I think about another $500 afterwards for the antibiotics I had to have in labor and mother/baby care postpartum.

To have a baby in a hospital it will cost between 5-6 Thousand dollars. If you don't have insurance, check with medicaid to see if you qualify for their program, it pays all your Dr's appointments and hospital bills for having a baby. But you must meet their income requirements. Other options include having a home delivery with a midwife if you can't afford the hospital bill.

Our insurance has a site where we can go and see how much they were charged for our care. I had a baby in January. The charges for the hospital stay, the OB/GYN and our daughter's pediatrician to visit added up to $12,156. This is for a healthy newborn and a three day stay (well, two and a half really since our daughter was born in the late afternoon).

Do you have a deductable to use up? Every insurance is different. I have to pay around 600 for a regular vaginal birth with no complications.

I don't know, I had insurance at that time and everything was covered, except for my prenatal vitamins and sonograms (I had a copay.)
