Hungarians are of the Ugric ethnic group. Many are deceinded from the Mongol tribes that overran much of Europe. We're all familiar with Attilla the Hun.
They are closely related to the Estonians, Fins, Samoyeds, Lapps and a number of other small clans found mostly in Russia. All the above groups are ethnic Ugrics. Those, including the Hungarians are loosely related to the Turks.

Hungarians are descendants of the Huns (as in Attila).
Hungary not too long ago celebrated its 1000 year anniversary as a nation.

The origins of the Magyars is somewhat disputed, but the most common theory is that their ancestors lived east of the Ural Mountains in Russia. They migrated West, arriving in what is today Hungary around 900 AD. The only ethnic group that is closely related to the Magyars is the Finns, who share a common linguistic root.
