Dalton or Lavoisier
Trouble is "father of chemistry" does not really mean anything. Chemistry has always existed (at least when the plasma cooled), the study of chemistry has been going on for thousands of years. Modern chemistry "correct from the scientific point of view" began with quite a few names but the above pair seem to be key

This is an interesting question. I did an internet search for "father of chemistry" ( http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient-ff&ie=UTF-8&rls=GGGL,GGGL:2006-11,GGGL:en&q=father+of+chemistry ) and found four names alluded to as the "father of chemistry":
1. Jabir Ibn Haiyan, known as the alchemist Geber of the Middle Ages, is generally known as the Father of Chemistry. - from http://www.islamonline.com/cgi-bin/news_service/profile_story.asp?service_id=910
2. Robert Boyle (1627-1691), ‘The Father of Chemistry’, was the most influential scientist ever born in Ireland. - from http://understandingscience.ucc.ie/pages/sci_robertboyle.htm
3. John Dalton - The Father of Chemistry - from http://www.abc.net.au/rn/science/ss/stories/s1427745.htm
4. Lavoisier, A.L. (1743-1794)
Discovered nitrogen. Described the composition of many organic compounds. Sometimes regarded as the Father of Chemistry. - from http://chemistry.about.com/cs/history/a/aa020204a.htm
This site ( http://www.cs.odu.edu/~vbanavar/catalyst/c2002/modernChem.htm ) likewise claims that "Antoine Lavoisier (1743-1794) is called the Father of Modern Chemistry, having discovered that water is made of hydrogen and oxygen."
Now, I too am confused.
