Modern pencil leads are graphite (a form of carbon) and clay. The ratios and source of the clay effect the hardness of the "lead". Deposits of clay are formed in slow-moving waters. I don't know if any is mined for that reason in the Mississippi River. I know that Wyoming does have a number of clay deposits that are mined.
The metal lead will also mark a paper and was used historically. But it is toxic.

graphite, is one of the allotropes of carbon. Unlike diamond, graphite is a conductor, and can be used, for instance, as the material in the electrodes of an electrical arc lamp. Graphite holds the distinction of being the most stable form of solid carbon ever discovered. It may be considered to be the highest grade of coal, just above anthracite, although it is not normally used as fuel because it is hard to ignite.

Myth I think.
Lead hasn't been used for ages (if at all) in pencils due to health risks.
