We made all sorts of things. The absolute best was helping my dad in his workshop. He set up a little vise and stuff at our height, so we could hammer and saw. "We" built a canoe from a kit. Any guy who's willing to make anything out of fiberglass (which is insanely itchy) with four kids ranging from about 3-8 'helping' is a saint! He also made us these flat wooden turtles with a hole in the head; you put a cord through the hole, then tie the cord at the top of the stairs; when you pull the cord at the bottom, the turtle moves, and you can make it walk up the stairs. We had all sorts of races and stuff.

And of course, we did all the silly things kids do - made musical instruments, faux science gear, I made my own Price is Right games once when I was sick for quite a while and watched a lot of day-time tv. We even tried to make our own 'stove' out of a coffee can turned upside down over a fire (this was out of the boy scout handbook), which got me in a lot of trouble.

Homemade toys are always the best, because it's double fun - you have the fun of making it and then playing with it.

Yeah, the toy that you make out of a string and a large button with 2 holes in the center. You put the string through both holes and then tie the string so you have a continuous loop with the button in the middle and then holding the string at each end you twirl it and then pull the string and the button spins.
It's hard to explain but it's fun.

We played with boxes etc, but we did build dens in the bush and made wooden furniture out of old bits of wood and beer crates we found in the bush.

My brother and I used to draw farm animals, buildings and fences colour them in and cut them out with a flange at the bottom to fold back so they would stand up. Our dad was a printer so we had plenty of card but even buying card it wouldn't be expensive and kept us occupied for hours.

My mom used to make parachutes out of string and one of my Dad's hankies and tie it to a little green plastic army man for my brother to play with.

We also used to blow into the candy boxes and make them whistle rudely!

I made a little teddy bear with a scarf on. It was really pathetic but I loved it when I was a kid.
