I had this problem with my Ipod, I got rid of it as it kept going back for repair and still broke after about a week, Ipods are rubbish get a different one

Well, there are several things you can try. First, I would make sure the USB port you're plugging it into is an active one that's plugged in on the inside of the computer. Then, if you have any other USB ports, try all of them to see if any of those work. Try one that already has something plugged into it, like the printer or something, that you know has power to it. If that doesn't work, I would uninstall itunes and quicktime, restart your computer, and then insert the CD and reinstall it.
Now, if none of these work, then you can go to apple.com and there is a Q&A for itunes. It has some trouble-shooting tips and a phone number you can call. Good Luck!

Mine did that. Go to the ipod website and download the iPod updater. From there you can see if it is an old version or you can reset it. Your songs will stay (i think) if not they are still in your iTunes folder on your computer. Hope i helped!
