It is rude to just ignore them. If you haven't got time to respond properly then just message back that you are busy now and will reply later. If you are not too busy and don't want to reply you might have to think about whether that person really is a friend, because otherwise why would you not want to reply to them?

Totally depends on the SITUATION. If there's no way you could message them back, try again if you can. But if by all means, you have all the time and the ability to do so and you IGNORED them. That is just plain bad and shameful.

it depends why your ignoring them and for how long, if your multi tasking and your going to get round to replying when you get a moment then no, you cant always be expected to give an instant respose...if its just becuase you dont want to talk the them it might be bad mannered it would depend on the urgence of there message

sometimes you're genuinely busy and cant help it... in that case, you write a sincere apology letter or send a note :)
but if the person is constantly sending u messages and u are not even taking out the time to reply to that person, then yes, it is considered rude :)
