IMO There never has and never will be anyone better than Richard Petty , he didnt have to knock people out of the way , he didnt have to scare you into submission , he didnt have to intimidate , he just simply out drove you , im not trying to take anything away from #3 but my opinion is that Richard Petty was the greatest driver to sit behind the wheel , but i also grew up watching the likes of Junior Johnson , Cale Yarbrough , The Alabama Gang etc etc so maybe i look at it with a different perspective

richard petty will never be beaten as far as total races won or most wins in a season. he was i think the best driver of his time which dale earnhardt sr was of his time. to compare them to each other i couldn't really tell you who was the greatest because they both were awesome drivers which made nascar what it is today and has been an inspiration to most drivers out there. so in my book i think that the two of them deserve the same spot as the greatest driver of all time.

While Earnhardt brought NASCAR all sorts of recognition, he'll never compare, in my book, to Richard Petty. I also grew up watching Junior Johnson, the Alabama Gang, etc., and with a few exceptions, they were all a class act.

I agree that Petty is the best!

Earnhardt brought something new to racing, liked or not, he was a great racer as well!

However, if we could turn back time, have them both in a race at the same time with the rules Nascar implies today...Petty would win hands down!

I have respect for both, but Petty is the best, he pioneered with the Wood Brothers the art of the quick Pit Stop- he was far ahead of anyone at his time- Dale began without a Sponsor and took it all on- and made it up that ladder- both were great at this sport.

petty drove in an era with alot more races and when cars were not equal...his families $$$ made his car far more superior over the other competitors from the start. he drove for alot more years than earnhardt, if earnhardt would not beaten his records had they competed the same amount of races with the same quality equipment on the same style tracks and the same competitors, he surely woulda tied him. 2 great drivers that deserve our respect.

one simple thing, no one will ever know ho w many more championships dale earnhardt had left in him. i think, if he were still alive, he might be a 8 or 9 time champ by now, possinly even 10, he had that kind of talent and attitude

DE was great because he was a pioneer. He was a bully not a racer. Petty has been pretty good himself.
