I believe murder is called assassination when it is done for reasons such as political or religious.
I don't think its so much the person killed, but what killing that person is supposed to achieve.

People with power in politics or religion are assassinated. You could be important and still be murdered. John Lennon was murdered.

Assassination is the deliberate killing of an important person, usually a political figure. They usually have a political agenda, and regards the target as a serious obstacle to furthering their agenda. Other motivations may be money or revenge.

They have to be at like "white house" level or known throughout the US. We plebians will never achieve that level, so if we get killed, they will say that we were murdered instead of having the honor of being assassinated..... so sad.... *sniffle*

It would depend on the reason they were murdered. If it's for no reason at all, even a famous person could be merely murdered.
