Revenge is the 'r' word you caution us against, right?

Retaliation and revenge are controlling behaviors - and the control is by the one causing me to retaliate or seek revenge. Recognizing that I am submitting to the offender's control is helpful to me in removing myself from the viciousness of revenge-seeking.

Though a natural, instinctive response throughout the animal kingdom (based on observation), striking back when injured can be the 'wrong' thing to do in terms of survival. It can also needlessly harm in other ways, such as in causing acccumlated stress disorders or simply distract one from a more productive activity.

I once read a quote by a jurist (I forget who), that said something like: vengeance is a natural human behaviour, and the more people want to use it, the more the law should prevent it. A lust for vengeance is felt by those posessed by hate and fear: you're not yourself when you feel this way, but you know deep down that to get back at a person violently just causes more problems. Seek retribution only through the law, however unsatisfying that may be. Another quote from another person whose name I forget: "when we are dealing with animals it is important to avoid becoming animals ourselves".

Justified? Absolutely.
Is it always wise? No.

If you retaliate against a single wolf, the pack may attack.
Vengence is natural and justified, but its rarely the smart thing to do regarding survival.

Revenge is never ever sweet - I speak from experience. And the other party really just doesn't care, you've just made a bigger fool of yourself as far as they're concerned.
