In response to the answer above, which states that "if you can afford to fly, you can afford a passport." passports are not just used for flying. I live in Minnesota where people DRIVE across the border to Canada. I imagine the case is also true in the Southwest where people drive across to Mexico. Also, people who do not have birth certificates (there are such -- think of how many records were destroyed in the Katrina flood, for example) or whose current name does not match that on their birth certificate for some reason (adopted? Married? Changed name for other reasons?) often use passports as proof of US citizenship. Many employers and government offices are now requiring proof of citizenship and accept ONLY a birth certificate or passport. So yes, it CAN be a hardship for some to have to pay $90. Spread out over 10 years it doesn't seem like much, but you don't pay in installments -- you pay in a lump sum. And for a poor family, that can be prohibitive.

If you can't afford a $90 passport, then by no means will you be able to afford a $300 plane ticket. But yes, the price of passports are high, but as for affordability if you have the means to fly, you can purchase a passport.

This is a really strange question. Most Americans can afford a passport! Since it is good for 10 years, the price is not at all unreasonable.

I wasn't aware of this. Passports are less than $100. Who can't afford that?

I don't agree. I think it is a major problem. Is it any wonder that so many of them think of the US as the world. If you never go anywhere else or meet different people, you will not learn anything else. They need to get out and mingle more.
