What a great question!
I think it's because we always link the FORGIVE with the FORGET.
Most people will make an attempt to forgive someone and get on with their life, but they can't forget about what happened.
That's the hardest part. And, if you can't forget, it takes you back to "have you really forgiven?" that person.

I think people who've been able to forgive someone, will always feel that they can't really trust the person not to do something hurtful again. So maybe the not being able forget part is self protection.

Sometimes situations in life hurt you so bad you hold on to that grudge for dear life and the pain is so bad that you never forget even if you forgive a person the pain is so intense you will often bring the situation back up many times after forgiveness because it hurt you so bad!

I think people can forgive but unless hit in the head really hard, have a hard time forgetting. If someone hurts you really bad and they say they are sorry, it doesn't just make the pain go away like a quick fix or something.

Hey, most of us can forgive. It's the forgetting part that gets to us. That means before you do something that might hurt someone, you should think twice. And treat others as you would want to be treated. Then you're not in this situation.

because when you are the one saying i am sorry and rying to make them forgive you they dont give a ****, and they wont budge, and they break you down to your weakest link, and when you are about to give up [to the point where you dont give a **** to what they think and if the wont forgive you then you dont care] they forgive you, trust me i know how you feel, my X bff was like that [a lot], but i learned, i was tired of it, and the only time they[she (my X bff) understand is when it is the other way around and they are saying sorry to you! i really dont know why people cant do that, but it isnt fair is it! maybe thats why the world is so pitaful! maybe some day we will forive and forget!

i dont think its fair to tell someone to forget it,though they may forgive.if someone wrongs u and apologizes, sure u ll forgive that but u cant expect it to be deleted from that persons memory.u can go back to being friends but if u do something like that again, naturally it ll be considered as the 2nd time u did that.if u wrong someone, ask for forgiveness.when u get it, try ur best to not repeat it

we are wired in such a way that when bad things that happen which we can not stomach....they are always pushed in the subconsious minds which always come back as a reminder to make us balanced in life after a given time. Even though some one forgives...the subconsious will always take a long long time to rub such act out its system........thus not forgeting.
