A leading nation isn't necessarily which nation has the most money, or WMD's, or the will and capabilities to play "policeman of the world." It's the country that plays humanitarian when needed, works to alleviate poverty, and only gets involved in war matters when diplomacy is no longer an option. America once was this and in alot of ways still is; but America also needs to realize that it is not the big guy on the block all the time when it comes to attacking at will.

I think britsurfer1 just about nailed the answer. Only things I can add to that relate to help and guidance. What I mean is a leading nation is the one you would want to contact first to deal with a crisis (whether it be the tsunami in the indian ocean or an earthquake, terror attack, etc). The 2nd, guidance is about being the nation for which others look to in terms of how to structture rules of govt, of society,etc.

A good economy (wealth), military strength. Lots of good land, political allies at home and international.
America is a leading nation because it has a powerful military, good technology developement, wealth, international allies (e.g. Britain) and it has lots of varying land for growing crops and building constructions. One of the most valuable things that America has is that everything the America people want is in the US.
