AgNO3 +Cl- ---------> AgCl(white ppt) + NO3-
or heat the small amont of wash by adding MnO2 and 2 drops of conc.H2SO4 you get a greenish yellow vapours with pungent odour if clorides are present.

Take a little volume of the wash in a test tube and add silver nitrate to it. If chloride is present , it will give white precipitate of silver chloride.

Silver Nitrate added as a solution to the wash. If a precipitate is formed, there are still chlorides present as AgCl is insoluble in water. A persistently clear solution means no chlorides in your wash.

Add silver chloride to a small amount of the sample. If a white curdy precipitate forms, chlorine is present.
